4 Freedoms...

  1. UN of human rights.

  2. FREEDOM OF SPEECH,FREEDOM OF RELIGION,FREEDOM FROM WANT,FREEDOM FROM FEAR

^^freedom of Speech

  • Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation in public.

  • used to denote not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

  • Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are closely related , yet distinct from, the concept of freedom of thought.

  • The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as "the right to hold opinions without interference, Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression".

Importance

A nation's unity is created through blending individual differences rather than imposing homogeneity from above; that the ability to explore the fullest range of ideas on a given issue was essential to any learning process and truth cannot be arrived upon unless all points of view are first considered; and that by considering free thought, censorship acts to the detriment of material progress.

it is up to each individual to uncover their own truth; no one is wise enough to act as a censor for all individuals.

Democracy

For such a system to work an informed electorate is necessary.there must be no constraints on the free flow of information and ideas.freedom of speech helps to provide a good balance between stability and change."The principle of open discussion is a method of achieving a moral adaptable and at the same time more stable community.Opposition serves a vital social function in offsetting or ameliorating (the) normal process of bureaucratic decay.

Social Interactions and communities.

By communicating an individual forms relationships and associations with others - family, friends, co-workers, church congregation, and countrymen. By entering into discussion with others an individual participates in the development of knowledge and in the direction of the community."

Limitations on freedom of speech.

  • The freedom of speech is not absolute.

  • may follow the "harm principle" or the "offense principle", for example in the case of pornography or "hate speech.

  • liberty of expression is required to push arguments to their logical limits, rather than the limits of social embarrassment.

  • Certain expressions can be prohibited by law ...example: Vulgar language in public buses !

The Internet.

freedom of information;

  • Freedom of information is an extension of freedom of speech where the medium of expression is the Internet.

  • Freedom of information may also concern censorship in an information technology context, i.e. the ability to access Web content, without censorship or restrictions.[citation needed]

  • Freedom of opinions and expression : Youtube!

  • ADV: radio programs...petitions...improvement for the civilians.

^^FREEDOM OF RELIGION

1)Freedom of religion is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.

2)The concept is generally recognized to also include the freedom to change religion or not to follow any religion. Freedom of religion is considered by many in many nations and people to be a fundamental human right.

3)it is a form of injustice (spiritual injustice) when persons are denied the liberty to exercise their religious freedom [1]. Freedom of religion as a legal concept is related to, but not identical with, religious toleration, separation of church and state, or secular state .

Why is freedom of religion important?

My beliefs...etc etc

Persecution...Today there are concerns about the persecution of religious minorities in the Muslim world and in some communist states such as China and North Korea, as well as other forms of intolerance in other countries .

Muslims girls :

veils in schools???teachers believed it would make communication and learning difficult.

the ban was "proportionate" in the light of certain factors:

-the veil prevented teachers from seeing facial expressions - a key element in effective classroom interaction .
-the necessity to enforce a school uniform policy under which girls of different faiths would have a sense of equality and identity.
-security - the head teacher had said an unwelcome visitor could move around the school incognito
the need to avoid peer pressure on girls to take up wearing the veil.

Mru:

  • multiracial country
  • racial tensions ...not that much yet increasing....ex:politics(favour this community etc etc)
  • prejuidice - discrimination in the work field--it does exist...but should religion mix with public life?definitely not...2 separate issue!

freedom from want.

The third is freedom from want--which, translated into universal terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants--everywhere in the world.

The past 25 years have seen the most dramatic reduction in extreme poverty that the world has ever experienced. Spearheaded by progress in China and India, literally hundreds of millions of men, women and children all over the world have been able to escape the burdens of extreme impoverishment and begin to enjoy improved access to food, health care, education and housing.

For centuries, this kind of poverty has been regarded as a sad but inescapable aspect of the human condition. Today, that view is intellectually and morally indefensible. The scale and scope of progress made by countries in every region of the world has shown that, over a very short time, poverty and maternal and infant mortality can be dramatically reduced.

Freedom from fear.

The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world.
